In a quiet NHS office, an overworked staff member sits alone at his desk… until, one by one, the people he’s trying to help begin appearing beside him. A desperate mother. A struggling young person. A disillusioned father fighting a broken system. Each carries the weight of real-life experiences with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities services.
SEND services are relied upon by more than a million families in the UK, yet many are facing exhausting, painful barriers when trying to access support. To help surface these lived experiences and influence change, Healthwave Hub partnered with Lightbox Film Co. to create an emotionally impactful film grounded in real stories.
Using Healthwave’s research into the frustrations and emotional strain of engaging with the SEND system, Lightbox Film Co. developed five fictional personas that captured the voices and challenges of real people.
To communicate the overwhelming nature of these challenges, the film places the NHS worker at the centre, with each persona materialising beside him as though their stories are impossible to ignore. This device allows viewers to experience the cumulative pressure that both families and frontline staff face, while grounding the film in a single, compelling location. The reveal at the end, an automated message announcing the NHS worker’s departure, is the final blow – the system lets down these families again and again.
Through performances and a script rooted in lived experience, the film presents a clear, human picture of a system under pressure. The film became a powerful tool for Healthwave and local NHS partners, helping communicate urgent realities to service leaders and decision-makers. By giving voice to real families’ experiences, the film continues to support ongoing efforts to reshape SEND services with greater empathy, understanding and accountability.
